Inspired by Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis
Artist's Statement:
Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis invited
me to envision Gregor’s bedroom. I imagined a nostalgic, askew, and overall
unsettling childish space. Sharp lines emanate an unsafe and harsh reality for
Gregor. The simulated chipped, ancient, and weathered wood suggests a space
that is in need of repair. The
crookedness of the unpolished window frame reminds the viewer of the
imperfection within Gregor’s world. The faded wallpaper suggests the passing of
time as well as impoverished decorative opportunities. The portrayal of an
overcast day suggests a world void of light and optimism. A nail in the wall
holds a framed picture of Gregor in human form and offers Gregor the cockroach
something worse than a mirror; rather than viewing himself in the present, he
is also reminded of the past with a photo of who he had been before his
metamorphosis. Overall, I wanted my piece to give the effects of time passing,
a past unattainable, and an impoverished and pessimistic view of Gregor and the
issues he faced within his short life.
Piece Name: Opposing Diners
This piece was inspired by the movie Silence of the Lambs.
This artwork portrays unsettling ideas with predictable undertones. Both sides of my piece are almost parallel to one another, showing conflicting but alike forces in opposition. The left side feels rushed, panicked, and desperate, and the right side is composed, unbothered, and prepared. The tiny tea set within a larger tea set communicates both predictability and unreliability through the concept of layers, pulling the viewer into a different world where they can perceive the natural as wholly unnatural. The knife, pointing its sharp edge against the panicked left side, symbolizes how the right side is winning. While both sides are similar, the backdrop of the symmetrical rug design suggests that both spaces are operating on the same, parallel terms, whether they acknowledge their sameness or not.
100 Objects Updates!
It was windy, so some of the shots I planned for outside didn't get to happen today, but that's okay. Judith helped me get some cool ones inside and a handful outside that worked out well.
I'm not sure how I feel about these caged pictures above... it just felt like I couldn't get a great angle.
Pouring them down the stairs was hilarious until the wind carried them towards the pathway that leads to the front lawn of Markland. Good thing nobody was leaving their office! Also, I flipped the one photo upside down to see if it would distort it a little more.
So far, I like stairs, but the ping pong balls do this thing where they spread QUICKLY. The wind made it hard to use the objects on the wall of the Markland house, too, so hopefully it won't be too windy later on.
